If you're looking for a family beach holiday, then the Algarve in Portugal is one of my absolute favourites! We visited when my daughter was 2.5 yrs old and with over 150 beaches, excellent seafood, and a coast compact enough to drive end to end in under two hours we had a fantastic trip. (p.s. Did you know Portugal gets over 300 days of sunshine per year..?)

The beaches are dramatic in the west with golden rock formations and sheltered coves, and wide and sandy in the east, with shallow, warm lagoon water so there is plenty to explore and lots of different options for family friendly accommodation.

Praia do Canavial

This post covers four key bases: Lagos, Carvoeiro, Albufeira and Tavira. For everything to do once you arrive, read our posts Top Places to Visit in the Algarve with a Toddler and Best Beaches in the Algarve with a Toddler. You'll also find all our Portugal blog posts here.

Lagos

Lagos is a historic town with sixteenth century walls, cobbled streets, good restaurants, a lively marina but compact and mostly flat, which makes navigating with a pram quite easy. It's the largest city in the western Algarve region and one of the most popular spots for tourists, so there is plenty to do here in terms of restaurants and entertainment.

It's the ideal base for the western coast with places like Ponta da Piedade, Praia Dona Ana and, my personal favourite, Praia do Canavial just a short drive away (or a longer walk if you feel up for it!).

Worth noting: accommodation in Lagos tends to be pricier than elsewhere in the Algarve, so you generally get slightly less space for your money. Always check current rates as prices vary significantly by season.

1. Vacation Retreat (from around £60/night)

Best for: Families who want a quiet, residential base with a shared pool.

This self-catering apartment is in a peaceful neighbourhood, just a 10–15 minute walk from the town centre and beaches. You get two bedrooms and a fully equipped kitchen, which makes managing breakfast and snacks so much easier. The complex also has a separate kids' pool, which is a life-saver on hot afternoons when you don't feel like heading to the main beach. It’s a very practical, low-stress choice that gives you enough room to spread out.

2. Lagos Central Apartments (from around £80/night)

Best for: Parents who want to walk to pastries in the morning and drive to a different beach every day.

These apartments put you right in the heart of Lagos. Being within walking distance of the best breakfast spots and the marina is a huge logistical win. It’s the perfect base because you can pop out for a coffee and a fresh pastry with the toddler in tow, then load the car for whichever beach takes your fancy. It is a fantastic option if you want to spend your time exploring the coastline rather than sitting in hotel traffic.

3. Lagos Atlantic Hotel (from around £90/night)

Best for: Families wanting a proper hotel experience near a gorgeous beach.

If you prefer a hotel over an apartment, this 4-star property is a standout. It sits just 500 metres from Porto de Mós Beach and features a dedicated children's pool. They happily provide cots, and the quieter location at this end of Lagos is much better for families than the bustling centre. They also offer free on-site parking, which makes day trips along the western coast incredibly easy.

Carvoeiro

If you want something a bit quieter than Lagos, then Carvoeiro is a great option. A small, whitewashed seaside village right on a sheltered bay, with the beach at the bottom of the town at sea level. The town is just the right size - easy for a 2 yr old to walk around in, and there's enough in the way of cafes, restaurants and ice cream shops that the adults are perfectly happy too. It is also more centrally located on the southern coast, so a good base if you want to explore both east and west without doing too much driving.

Carvoeiro Beach

We visited for dinner one evening after a day at Silves (20 minutes inland by car, worth combining), and ended up staying much later than planned. The kids played in the sand while we had a glass of wine outside at one of the waterfront restaurants and watched the sun go down. Exactly what a family holiday should look like! Walk up the steps at either end of the beach at sunset, the light along the coast is worth the effort.

Wine on the Beach in Carvoeiro

One note: Because it is a much smaller town than places like Lagos, accommodation options are limited, and prices reflect that. Worth booking ahead, especially for peak dates.

1. Hotel Carvoeiro Plaza (from around £80/night)

Best for: Being in the absolute centre of the action.

You can’t get more central than this because it’s located directly in front of the beach square. It’s not a luxury resort, but you won't care; you’ll spend your whole day on the beach, which is literally right there. They offer a breakfast buffet, a small pool, and paid parking, but the real selling point is that you are just steps from the sand. It’s perfect for families who want to go from the beach back to the room for nap time without any hassle.

2. Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort (from around £250/night)

Best for: A high-end luxury escape with clifftop views.

If you are looking for a 5-star experience, the Tivoli is the place to be. It overlooks Vale Covo and offers dedicated Family Rooms, a beautiful spa, and multiple restaurants. It sits at the start of the Seven Hanging Valleys walk. While the trail isn't pram-friendly, it is a stunning hike if you have a carrier, and the resort's shuttle to the beach makes it feel effortless.

Albufeira (and Olhos de Água)

Albufeira is the most popular and touristy town on the coast. It's also centrally located, which makes it one of the most practical bases if you want to explore the region in all directions. The main beach is long and accessible, reached by both steps and a lift. There's a mini train that does circuits around town (our daughter was very excited about this), and the Albufeira marina is the departure point for day trips like the Dolphin and Benagil Cave boat tours that I'd put near the top of any Algarve itinerary.

Benagil Cave

You'll also find several water parks, zoos and theme parks near Albufeira, like Aqualand, Krazy World Zoo and Zoomarine Algarve, in case you want a change from the beach. It's worth noting though that in high season, Albufeira gets rowdy at night. Out of season, or if you stay in one of the quieter surrounding villages, it's a completely different place.

We stayed in Olhos de Água, a small seaside village about 10 minutes' drive from Albufeira's centre, and it was one of the best calls we made. Its own beach has rock pools, a boardwalk that runs alongside dramatic red ravine-like cliffs (beautiful at sunset) and a handful of waterfront restaurants. Try the seafood cataplana at La Cigale. I've had cataplana at several places along this coast and this was the best! There was enough going on that we could walk to dinner in the evening and feel like we were somewhere, but it was quiet enough to actually rest.

Cataplana at La Cigale

1. RosaMar Apartment Sea View & Pool (from around £70/night)

Best for: Budget-conscious families who value self-catering flexibility.

These apartments are great value if you want a kitchen to manage dinner at your own pace. You get pool access and sea views, which is a lovely way to end the day after the kids are asleep. It’s a very practical, no-fuss option for parents who prefer the ease of a kitchen over the nightly restaurant hunt.

Best for: Parents who want a stress-free, all-inclusive "kids-are-sorted" holiday.

This is the standout family choice in the area. It’s a 5-star all-inclusive resort with its own water park, slides, a Kids Club, and a free shuttle to the beach. Because meals are buffet-style across two restaurants, you never have to worry about finding a table or keeping the little ones patient at a restaurant. This is the perfect place for an easy family trip with everything included!

Tavira

Tavira is in the eastern Algarve and has a noticeably different atmosphere - less developed, more authentically Portuguese, with a historic old town full of churches, Roman bridges and azulejo-tiled facades. It's perfectly located if you wanted to explore more of the east coast, and you can even do a day trip to Seville in Spain (about a 2-hour drive). We didn't make it to Tavira on this trip, and I've been quietly annoyed about it since. My sister-in-law and her family had stayed here previously and loved it: local feel, beautiful architecture and a calm atmosphere.

Armona Island Beach

One of the highlights of this part of the coast is the fine sand barrier islands Tavira, Armona and Culatra. Tavira Island is reached by ferry from the Tavira port, while the islands Armona dn Culatra can be reached from the nearby town Olhao. We went to Armona Island and it was one of our favourite day trips! The water is shallow and a lot calmer than the beaches further west, and there are no cars on the islands so they're like little oases. Tavira is also a good starting point for the eastern Algarve, and for a day trip to Seville (about two hours by car).

1. Tavira Vacation Apartments (from around £80/night)

Best for: Being within walking distance of the town, the river, and the island ferry.

These apartments are incredibly practical. You’re walkable to the town centre and the ferry port, meaning you can jump on a boat to the islands without needing a car. Having that walkability is a massive advantage when you want to pop out for a quick ice cream or explore the Roman bridges in the evening.

2. Quinta da Baleeira (from around £120/night)

Best for: Families who want a quiet, rural escape with an infinity pool.

This rural estate is about 5 minutes from town. You get a fully equipped kitchen and a beautiful infinity pool with sea views. It’s much quieter than staying in the centre, giving you a chance to actually relax while the kids play. It’s a lovely, slower-paced alternative to the more built-up tourist resorts.

A Few Final Thoughts

The Algarve works well with a toddler because the pace of it suits families. The beaches are sheltered, the towns have outdoor dining and restaurants that are relaxed about children and mess. The region is small enough that you don't lose days to travel and the variety (beaches, boat trips, historic towns, gorge walks, mountain drives) means there's always something for every kind of day, including the days when someone is tired and needs nothing more than three hours on a beach with a bucket.

Ponta de Piedade, Lagos

That said, if you're asking which properties I'd reserve first: Jupiter Albufeira Hotel is the pick if you want a proper all inclusive family resort where meals, pools, slides and entertainment are all sorted in one place. For something with more character and independent, Lagos Atlantic Hotel is our top hotel recommendation: the location near Porto de Mós Beach is lovely, the complimentary cots and children's pool make it properly family-ready. Finally, if budget is the priority, Quinta da Baleeira near Tavira is the hidden gem of the list because it is a beautiful rural quinta with a pool, full kitchens and a price that feels very fair for what you get. For any of these, booking ahead is worthwhile, especially in July and August when the Algarve fills up fast.
