Although Käringön is a small island there are plenty of options to eat here. Whilst my favourite thing is still to get a kilo of crayfish from the fishmonger and eat it at home, there are lots of great options when you don't want to cook yourself. This is the guide to the best places to eat on Käringön with kids when you visit, from harbourside seafood to easy pizza nights.

Planning where to sleep too? Check out our full guide to where to stay on Käringön for everything from harbour-view hotels to cosy self-catering cottages, so you can book both in one go.
Best Places to Eat on Käringön
1. Petersons Tavern
I have never eaten here but that’s because this is the most popular (and best) place to eat on the island and impossible to get a table on the day. Even my family who live on the island have only eaten here a handful of times! It features on multiple lists of best seafood restaurants in Sweden and the food is meant to be unbelievable. The mussels and oysters are some of the menu highlights and they are expert at cooking fish.
As well as delicious food you can sit on the outside tables on the water and enjoy the stunning views and fresh sea air whilst you eat. If you come here by boat you can dock right next to the restaurant! It’s very important to book well in advance to make sure you get a table. We passed by in August and they said they were booked up all the way until February the following year!

2. Käringöns Brygga
This is another great option for food with a great location right on the harbour meaning you have stunning sea views. The seafood here again is great and because of the location it’s perfect for lunch, dinner or a cosy place for a fika during the day. My cousin’s daughters were working here over the summer so we came in for drinks a few evenings to enjoy the sunset and ambiance of the place. My favourites here are the fish soup and shrimp sandwich at lunchtime!

3. Simsons Restaurant
Not to be confused with Simsons Vincafe down the road, Simsons Restaurant is inside the island’s old vicarage. It’s a cosy place with a menu that changes with what’s been landed that day. The nettle soup comes up again and again as the dish to order if it’s on, and the white fish and herring get just as much praise for how fresh and well judged they are. Portions are on the smaller side by design so you can work through several courses without rolling out the door, and it’s good value for the quality when you consider a full tasting menu comes in at around 700 SEK before wine. 4. Simsons Vincafe
A more casual option just around the corner, Simsons Vincafe is in a cosy setting and the main draw here are the pizzas, or if you prefer there are sharing plates. If you’re here for the pizzas then there are 5 to choose from so you’re not overwhelmed by choice, including the weekly special. Service can be slow when the place is busy, so it’s not the spot for a rushed lunch, but it’s a great place for a drink and an easy meal that the kids will gobble down.
5. Bengtssons Grill och Korv
When you need something fast and easy, or every other table on the island is fully booked, Bengtssons Grill och Korv is the one to head for. It’s simple, fast food and pizza, and exactly what you want when you’ve got hungry kids and zero patience left! The fish and chips here get a lot of love, and the salmon burger plate is a good shout if you want something a bit more substantial than a hot dog.

Warning: the tables outside give you nice views but I’ve seen Käringön’s seagulls swoop down and take pizza slices from peoples plates when they have been sat down eating.
6. Créperiet Käringön
Tucked away at Skeppersholme, Créperiet Käringön is the spot for galettes and crêpes, and they do a long, well-chosen list of French ciders to go with them. The little terrace at the back has a lovely sea view and it’s a proper suntrap in the afternoon. If you’re deciding what to order, the gorgonzola galette paired with a French cider is the classic combination here.
7. Boa Käringön
Boa Käringön is a cosy cafe which serves pizzas pastries and sandwiches that’s located opposite the minigolf meaning you can easily sit down for a fika whilst your kids play on the course and when they are finished you can get a snack or easy dinner for them once they are done.

Summary
For a small island there is a surprisingly strong food scene including one of the best seafood restaurants in Sweden. It shouldn't be a surprise the fish and seafood on this island are outstanding as much of it is locally sourced so it's the freshest it could be. Once you know where you are staying (remember to book your accommodation early if you are planning on visiting as there are only 280 houses on the island so places to stay are limited) then go ahead and call and make reservations. The place you need to make a reservation is Petersons Tavern to have the best dining experience of the island.
