Thinking about taking your toddler on a road trip abroad? It might sound wild (and maybe a little chaotic), but with the right prep, it can be one of the most rewarding ways to travel as a family 💛

Here are some of our top tips for a tantrum free road trip:

1️⃣ Fresh nappy
Always pop a fresh nappy on before getting into the car to reduce the chance of leaks! 👖

2️⃣ Use those naps
If you can schedule your journey with naptime then you can spend more time enjoying beautiful views 💤

3️⃣ Toys, books & music
Have a varied selection of entertainment ready so you can play, read and sing together 📚

🚘 Why your next family holiday should be a road trip!

We love a good road trip - in fact, I would go as far as to say that it’s our favourite type of holiday! Before our daughter was born, we weren’t sure if road trips would still be possible with a baby/toddler - but having done 5-6 road trips with our 2-year-old I can confirm they definitely are!

Here are some of the reasons why we love road tripping with our toddler:

⛰️ Freedom to go off the beaten track - road trips let you see more places in one trip, from scenic stops to hidden gems you’d miss by flying/public transport

🐻 Get up close with nature - one of our favourite things to look out for is local wildlife! So far we’ve been lucky enough to see things like bears, monkeys, vicunas, grey foxes and tarantulas (ok maybe lucky isn’t the right word for that last one…)

⏰ Flexible Schedules - you can travel at your own pace - pause for snacks, nappy changes, naps, or spontaneous playground stops.

🛌 Comfort - having a car means you can have comfort items handy like blankets, toys, snacks, even your toddler’s favorite playlist. For the duration of the holiday it becomes a home on wheels!

❤️ Making core memories - your toddler might not remember every detail, but the shared experiences, photos, and joy of exploring new places together are priceless - and will shape their love for travel from a young age!

Have you heard of this waterfall in Albania? 🇦🇱

This was one of our highlights from our entire Albania road trip last year - the waterfall is less than an hour’s drive from Berat, followed by a 15 minute walk, and is definitely a little hidden gem. 💎

📍 Bogovë Waterfall, Albania

The trail to the waterfall is easy to walk, but quite uneven so I would ditch the pram and bring a carrier/let your little one walk by themself if they can.

Once there, you can go for a swim in the crystal clear water (it is COLD 🥶 so only for adults - though my daughter dipped her toes in the shallow bits).

And if you go here, make sure to continue along the river into the beautiful Osumi Canyon!

⬇️ Things I wish I knew before travelling to Morocco with a toddler

Morocco is a great destination for a toddler holiday! It’s beautiful and diverse with plenty to do for adults and toddlers alike 🌴

However as with any destination, there are a few things worth bearing in mind if you’re planning to visit with young children:

🗣️ The cities are loud - the city centres in Morocco are very noisy - mopeds zig-zagging the narrow roads, street vendors shouting, big crowds of people, snake charmers, donkeys… Let’s just say I’m very happy I brought ear defenders for this trip (especially during nap time!)

☀️ It gets really hot - even when we went in February, the sun was very hot in the middle of the day. If you are planning on going in summertime, expect temperatures north of 40°C. Do early morning explorations, take midday breaks, and save energy for calm evenings.

🛝 Difficult finding playgrounds - compared to other places we’ve been, there weren’t many playgrounds around (in fact, we only went to one playground during the entire trip and that was at a service station). We ended up taking our daughter to parks and gardens instead where she enjoyed running around.

🏨 Riads aren’t always the most child-friendly - while they are beautiful, they are old, traditional buildings and therefore not designed with toddlers in mind. Lots of stairs, open courtyards, and fragile decor. We loved our Riad stay but we definitely had to keep an eye on our toddler!

❤️ Moroccans adore children - expect smiles, high-fives, and genuine kindness everywhere you go. My daughter always had a snack in her hand that some stranger had given to her - a piece of fruit, nuts, yoghurt pot, boiled egg… Your toddler will feel like royalty! 👑

🇲🇦 Day 6 of exploring Morocco with a toddler! 🇲🇦

A full day of exploring Paradise Valley! 🌴

Tucked away in the Atlas Mountains, this little oasis of crystal-clear pools, lush palm trees and stunning mountain views is the perfect day trip from Agadir or Taghazout.

We rounded off the day at Imi Quaddar beach with some seafood by the sea at sunset 🌅

⬇️ 5 things we always pack when travelling with our toddler

Travelling with little ones can be challenging, but the right gear makes all the difference! We have been on 30+ flights with our daughter and although packing will always depend on the type of destination/length of stay etc, there are definitely a few must-haves that we always bring with us!

1️⃣ Pram bag - no matter how small our pram, we always bring an XL pram bag to put it in. Why? Because this is a great way to smuggle all those things that you couldn’t fit in your hand luggage! 🤫

2️⃣ Baby/toddler carrier - although our toddler is now nearly 2,5 years old, having some form of sling/carrier makes travelling so much easier - especially when going through security/onboard the plane, etc. (Mainly because it stops her from escaping 😅)

3️⃣ Magnetic drawing board - this is currently our number 1 go-to toy for travelling. Our daughter loves drawing and painting, and this way you don’t need to worry about running out of paper/searching the floor for missing pen caps 🖍️

4️⃣ Snacks - this one is probably on most people’s list already, but if there’s one thing that works to keep a toddler happy, it’s snacks. Our go-to snacks at the moment are mini raisin boxes - they hardly take up any space and they’re a bit fiddly, meaning they keep our daughter entertained for longer! 🍇

5️⃣ Cuddly toy/travel pillow - this is a new addition to our list and has been a game changer! A cuddly toy that transforms into a travel pillow - perfect for having a sleep on the plane and the cuddly toy is now our daughter’s favourite - comfort + practicality = winning! 🧸

How it started vs how it's going 😎🚁

This helicopter ride was a real bucket list moment for us! Being able to take our toddler on this made it even more special - and she absolutely loved it! 🤩

We have so many great memories from our trip to Brazil and Argentina, and seeing the Iguassu Falls from above this way was definitely one of the highlights! 💦

This helicopter ride was a real bucket list moment for us! Being able to take our toddler on this made it even more special - and she absolutely loved it! 🤩

🇦🇷 Day 8 of our Nortern Argentina road trip with a toddler!

The final day of our road trip! And what an incredible trip this has been! 😍

We started the day by feeding the llamas at @dormirconllamas, then drove through the jungle back to Salta where we rounded off our holiday with an incredible meal at @houseofjasminesrelaischateaux.

Hoping to one day come back to this enchanting region of Argentina 🤍

🇦🇷 Day 8 of our Nortern Argentina road trip with a toddler!

The final day of our road trip! And what an incredible trip this has been! 😍

We started the day by feeding the llamas at @dormirconllamas, then drove through the jungle back to Salta where we rounded off our holiday with an incredible meal at @houseofjasminesrelaischateaux.

Hoping to one day come back to this enchanting region of Argentina 🤍

🇦🇷 Day 7 of our Nortern Argentina road trip with a toddler!

This day had some real trip highlights! It was our first time seeing salt flats so visiting the Salinas Grandes was one of things we’d been looking forward to the most this holiday. And it did not disappoint! 🧂

The 7 coloured mountain in Purmamarca was also incredible (my phone camera definitely doesn’t do it justice!) - I hadn’t expected the colours to be so vibrant as we’ve seen other rainbow mountains on this trip with more muted colours.

And the drive through the mountains today was one of the most spectacular drives of this trip (and no clouds this time! 😂)

10/10! ❤️

🇦🇷 Day 7 of our Nortern Argentina road trip with a toddler!

This day had some real trip highlights! It was our first time seeing salt flats so visiting the Salinas Grandes was one of things we’d been looking forward to the most this holiday. And it did not disappoint! 🧂

🇦🇷 Day 5 of our Nortern Argentina road trip with a toddler!

Today we left Cachi and headed back to Salta. This was such a diverse drive, starting with cactus groves 🌵 and red rocks, then through green, barren mountains reminiscent of Iceland ⛰️ and finishing through rainforest 🌴

I’ll admit I was very disappointed we didn’t get the view at the top of the mountain, but in hindsight, driving through a cloud down a hairpin road was a pretty cool experience (and when you’re at an altitude of nearly 4000 metres, you can expect there to be some clouds) ☁️

Finished the day with some food and amazing music at @rincondelolivo.salta (before being locked out of our Airbnb but that’s a story for another day 😅)

🇦🇷 Day 5 of our Nortern Argentina road trip with a toddler!

Today we left Cachi and headed back to Salta. This was such a diverse drive, starting with cactus groves 🌵 and red rocks, then through green, barren mountains reminiscent of Iceland ⛰️ and finishing through rainforest 🌴

I’ll admit I was very disappointed we didn’t get the view at the top of the mountain, but in hindsight, driving through a cloud down a hairpin road was a pretty cool experience (and when you’re at an altitude of nearly 4000 metres, you can expect there to be some clouds) ☁️

Finished the day with some food and amazing music at @rincondelolivo.salta (before being locked out of our Airbnb but that’s a story for another day 😅)

🇦🇷 Day 4 of our Nortern Argentina road trip with a toddler!

Today we left Cafayate behind and headed north to Cachi 🌵

This was another gorgeous drive! It took longer than expected as it was all dirt roads (and we stopped for photos a lot! 😍) but we managed to keep our toddler entertained with games, stops, and lots of snacks.

We arrived at our cabaña in Cachi just in time for dinner and got the most gorgeous view of the hills for sunset 🌅

Finished off with some 🍷 under a million stars 🌟

🇦🇷 Day 4 of our Nortern Argentina road trip with a toddler!

Today we left Cafayate behind and headed north to Cachi 🌵

This was another gorgeous drive! It took longer than expected as it was all dirt roads (and we stopped for photos a lot! 😍) but we managed to keep our toddler entertained with games, stops, and lots of snacks.

We arrived at our cabaña in Cachi just in time for dinner and got the most gorgeous view of the hills for sunset 🌅

Finished off with some 🍷 under a million stars 🌟

🇦🇷 Day 3 of our Nortern Argentina road trip with a toddler!

A day of birthday celebrations for my amazing husband! ✨

Spent most of the day at @piattelliwineresort and it was the perfect place to unwind for a few hours and enjoy some tasty wine! And Malva loved roaming around the vineyard (and we met a little fox 🦊)

Also had a delicious dinner at @pachacafayate! Such good food and ambiance.

🇧🇷 Day five of exploring Foz do Iguaçu with a toddler!

This was our last day in Foz do Iguaçu and as it was raining we enjoyed a lazy morning at the hotel.

In the afternoon the same came out and we went to @blueparkfoz - a massive water park with rides, water play, an artificial beach, zip line, and more. This was great - if you’re heading this way and can highly recommend a visit! 💦

A very special thanks to @visit.iguassu for organising this incredible trip - what a beautiful part of the world, we will carry this trip with us forever 🤍

🇧🇷 Day five of exploring Foz do Iguaçu with a toddler!

This was our last day in Foz do Iguaçu and as it was raining we enjoyed a lazy morning at the hotel.

🇧🇷 Day four of exploring Foz do Iguaçu with a toddler!

Today we went back to the Iguassu Falls, this time exploring the Argentina side!

I was amazed at how different it was from the Brazilian side, you get to go up above the waterfalls rather than next to them. Both sides are stunning in their own way, so if you are planning a visit here make sure you go to both countries!

We finished the day with an amazing meal at @emporiocomarte - well worth a visit if you’re in Foz do Iguaçu!

🇧🇷 Day four of exploring Foz do Iguaçu with a toddler!

Today we went back to the Iguassu Falls, this time exploring the Argentina side!

We had a great first day of our trip - after a 17-hour flight we were quite tired, but still managed to see a fair bit and get an introduction to Foz do Iguaçu and Brazilian culture.

Our daughter slept for most of the long haul flight and when she was awake she was happily drawing, playing with her sticker books and listening to music. 🖍️

We nearly missed our connection in São Paulo and had to run across the airport, toddler on hip, but we made it!
